Mrs Androulla Vassiliou is the former European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, (Feb. 2010-31 Oct. 2014). Previously, she served as Commissioner for Health, from March 2008 to Jan. 2010.
She studied law and international affairs in London and practiced law in Cyprus for twenty years (1968-1988). During this period she acted as legal advisor to the Standard Chartered Bank and, later, to the Bank of Cyprus.
She was twice elected to the Cyprus House of Representatives (in 1996 and 2001). She served as member of different committees among which the European Affairs Committee and represented the Cyprus Parliament to the Convention for the Future of Europe as an alternate member.
President of the UN Association of Cyprus (1978-1992); President of the World Federation of UN Associations (1991-1995, elected Honorary President at the end of her term); President of the Cyprus Federation of Business and Professional Women (1996-2000); Vice-President of the ELDR and chairperson of the European Liberal Women’s Network (2001-2006).
From 2002 to 2008 she chaired the Board of Trustees of the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre in Cyprus, a position she was asked by the President of Cyprus to resume as from the beginning of 2015.
Mrs Androulla Vassiliou has also joined the Board of Trustees of ‘Friends of Europe’ as from November 2014.
Commissioner Vassiliou is married to George Vassiliou, former President of the Republic of Cyprus and Chief Negotiator for Cyprus’ accession to the EU. She has three children.
